A great crowd turned out to celebrate the launch of this year’s Lough Ree Environmental Summer Festival on Friday night, 27th July in Lanesborough Commons Quarry. After braving a very unpredictable week of doubtful weather forecasts, the committee forged ahead and was delighted when it was favoured with a (nearly) dry evening and supported by an enthusiastic local turnout. A light drizzle accompanied the speakers, but passed on quickly to give way to a cool but pleasant, moonlit night.
The evening kicked off with the ever-atmospheric sound of Windsong Harp Ensemble, lead by Edel Loftus and was followed by a rousing set by traditional musicians Noel Carberry, Jimmy Flanagan, Joe McGrath and Fran Deffew. The Stanley Carroll School of Irish Dancing showcased its young talent with traditional Irish dancing to a contemporary sound.
John Waters officiated the launch. He related how taking the old roads winding trough the counties, off the dual carriageways and motorways, help him to slow down and take in the surroundings. His words reminded us all of the significance and relevance of our community and other such rural communities in preserving the true identity of Midlands Ireland. He had warm praise for the endeavours of the committee the hoped that the night was the first of many evenings in the Commons Quarry.
Philip Gordon laid on a delicious buffet at the end of the evening, accompanied by wine provided by Keane’s SuperValu.
The committee would like to thank all those who helped make the night possible from the artists, to the caterers, lighting and sound, John Waters and most of all everyone who turned out on the night to support the event. We hope to see you at the Summer Festival, beginning 9th August. For more information see the Festival Programme.
